Shaft, pit & headroom: the dimensions that matter

A practical guide by ICARE Lift System · helps you decide, in a 4-minute read

Before any lift conversation, two numbers decide your options: how much shaft space you have, and how much pit and headroom your building allows. Here’s what to measure and what’s possible.

Most “we can’t fit a lift” conclusions are wrong — they come from assuming a conventional lift needs a deep pit and a machine room. Modern home lifts don’t. Here are the real numbers.

The three measurements

  • Shaft footprint — the floor area available for the lift. ICARE home lifts start from compact footprints around 1 × 1 m for a small-capacity lift.
  • Pit depth — the recess below the lowest floor. Conventional lifts need deep pits; modern home lifts need very little, and some need none.
  • Headroom (overhead) — clearance above the top floor.

Typical requirements by technology

TechnologyMin pitMin overhead
HydraulicFrom 150 mmFrom 2400 mm
Belt driveLowFrom 2400 mm
Traction (rope)StandardFrom 2800 mm
ICARE Signature (imported)From 100 mmFrom 2500 mm
Screw driveNoneNone required

If you have low headroom or no pit

You still have options.

The imported Signature range needs only a 100 mm pit, and screw-drive needs no pit or headroom at all. “Not possible” almost never means not possible.

What if you have no built shaft at all?

Self-supporting lifts (screw drive and certain imported systems) bring their own structure and can be installed without constructing a shaft — ideal for finished homes. Where a shaft is needed, we can build it in metal or glass.

Don't measure alone

These figures get you oriented, but a quick site survey confirms what actually fits — including door swing, landing space and structural points. That survey is free, and it replaces guesswork with a real answer.
